Rant: I believe this is De Palma's first thriller. Before this was wacky comedies I've only seen bits and pieces of. Not sure if there's any Hitchcock in those films but it's all up in this bitch. It's no secret and nothing anyone else hasn't said. I'm a big fan of homages or "ripping off," as long as it's done well, and De Palma is definitely one of the best directors ever.
This is basically a Psycho/Rear Window hybrid movie except instead of a photographer thinking there's been a murder, a journalist actually sees the murder. Instead of Norman and his mother being the same person, it's Margot Kidder's character and her sister. I got the twist pretty early on, it's not hard to see. It's still a really fun movie and Margot Kidder does a great job. The split screen parts are great, I don't know why more movies don't use it. There's some "Rope" in there as well, and probably more Hitchcock movies I'm too dumb to notice.
There's a little gore and good suspense with all that shit and it has a great ending. This is a good awful horror movie.
