Director: John Carpenter
Starring: Lauren Hutton, David Birney, Adrienne Barbeau
Rant: I believe this is Awful Horror Movies' first made for TV movie. We made a point not to do any of the Syfy original shit for obvious reasons (at this point they're just doing it to tickle us) but this one's different. You have your Trilogy of Terror and your Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, but this one... it's fucking Carpenter.
It showed on NBC a month before Halloween was released in theaters and stars Carpenter's future wife Adrienne Barbeau. Also Charles Cyphers of Halloween, The Fog and Escape from New York. I never even heard of this movie before yesterday. For all the garbage I've found from IMDB, I guess it can do some good.
Adrienne Barbeau plays a fucking lesbian and her haircut is god awful. Just thought I'd point that out. So, Lauren Hutton plays Leigh Michaels, a television director and our main protagonist. She could have been better, honestly. The bad guy calls her on the phone and all that spooky shit. His phone voice is kinda cheesy but kinda creepy too. There's a nice jump scene about 15 minutes in and some Rear Window influence towards the end. It's actually pretty neat how they do it.
This is a decent little movie. Nothing special. I'm sure Scream borrowed it but there's plenty of movies where the bad guy torments a girl over the telephone. It's nice to watch if you're a fan but it's not gonna blow your socks off. It's made for TV so you'll know going into it there's no blood, no tits, no cussing. You just have to accept it for what it is. A watchable awful horror movie.
