Torment (2013)

Starring: Katharine Isabelle, Robin Dunne, and Peter DaCunha

Homicidal Maniac: The Family

Run Time: 1:20:12

Quick Synopsis: Things go horribly wrong as 7 year old Liam comes up missing while newlyweds Cory and Sarah head to the country for some family-time.

One line into the movie I knew that this was going to be one of the most annoying child actors that I have had the luck to review in awhile.  He truly does not have a single line that is not cringe-worthy.  He creates the perfect combination of high-pitched squealing and horrendous facial expressions to go along with an abysmal delivery.  Luckily for everyone watching he gets kidnapped 25 minutes in and we don't have to worry about him for awhile.  From that point on we have our standard home invasion movie.  There is
nothing original to see here but it still does the home invasion genre justice for most of the movie.  The leads are passable, but I find joy in the fact the husband could not portray much emotion, while the wife was borderline over-the-top with hers.  Some of Katharine Isabelle's scene reminded me of Cindy in the original Scary Movie.  It does add a little color and entertainment in an otherwise run-of-the-mill story.  The invaders are able to create some decent amount of terror, but once again nothing special.  The ending to the movie starts pretty awfully as little Liam has some more dialogue.  The movie embarrassingly attempts to convince the audience into believing that the son truly had reservations about coming back to his father after his kidnappers forced the father to say he did not love him anymore.  That was followed up by a reveal everyone saw coming and no one gave two shits about.   The last 15 minutes or so do not get much better (the kids voice is truly unbearable and he just doesn't stop opening his mouth) and finally we are left with another reveal that does not really add anything of significance, but hey why not just add some random shit into it.  One positive is that the video quality is pretty good for what you would expect from a low budget horror movie.  All in all this is just a cookie-cutter home invasion awful horror movie.

Fun Fact: Short people in mask are not always children, sometimes they are just short adults.

Hidden Gem:  There is a scene where an ax is struck through a door, next to a woman's face, much like the scene from The Shining.
