Rant: Take Se7en, sprinkle some Bad Lieutenant, throw fucking Pinhead into the mix and you get Hellraiser: Inferno. This is the fifth fucking movie in the Hellraiser franchise. In the spirit of Halloween I've been watching them all in order and I've never seen this one before. Fuck me, it's not bad at all.
We introduced to a coke snorting, hooker fucking detective named Joseph Thorne. He's been following a case of brutal murders where people are being shredded with hooks and there's a child's finger left at each crime scene. At one of them he finds the infamous puzzle box or Lament Configuration or whatever the fuck the kids are calling it. After that he starts having visions and dreams and one of the hookers he fucks ends up being killed. Eventually we can't tell if he's going crazy or what the fuck is going on. All we know is he's way in over his head.
Y'know how sequels to slashers usually give up on being scary and just try to be really gory and show tits and all that shit? This movie doesn't give a fuck about that. Of course there's gruesome parts but it also has some truly frightening parts. There's a very well made scene that takes place in a nursing home that will give anyone goosebumps.
Pinhead is probably in this the least of all the Hellraiser movies. His costume probably looks the worst out of the first five movies as well. I could see how that would be a disappointment but the story is good enough to forgive some things. Craig Sheffer and and Nicholas Turturro each give good performances as partnered detectives. They're another big part of why the movie works so well.
In no way, shape or form does this movie compare in quality to Hellraiser or Hellbound: Hellraiser II but I've been sitting around waiting for Hellraiser: Inferno to get awful and it hasn't. To trash shitty movies and discover good movies is what AwfulHorrorMovies is all about and this is a gem of an awful horror movie.
