Rant: As everyone knows, the 2002 Naomi Watts movie The Ring was a remake of a 1998 Japanese film called Ringu or simply Ring. The success of the remake led to a shit ton of other Japanese horror films being remade for the United States such as Dark Water (also directed by Hideo Nakata), The Grudge, Pulse and One Missed Call. I haven't seen many Japanese horror movies with the exception of Takashi Miike's work and I'm always up for some foreign horror.
So there's this video tape floating around out there and if you stumble across it and watch it you get a phone call that says "You will die in seven days." The images on this tape are fucking creepy as shit. There's nothing gory or disgusting, just really strange shit like a girl brushing her hair and a fucking well. The main girl is a reporter and she and her ex husband end up watching the tape and trying to solve the mystery of this creepy dead girl.
I've never seen a horror movie with such incredible pacing. Slowly and subtly it gets creepier and creepier until you find yourself really invested in the characters and really interested in what will happen next. Rarely do you read an interesting synopsis for a movie and have your expectations met after watching it.
The ending is truly horrifying and I'd be a bastard not to mention how perfect the music is. There's a reason Ringu was given a remake. That's because it's one of the most disturbing awful horror movies there is.
Fun Facts: This is the highest grossing horror movie in the history of Japan.
