The Faculty (1998)

Director: Robert Rodriguez

Starring: Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, and Clea Duvall

Homicidal Maniac: Alien Species Led by Spoiler

Run time: 1:44:00

Quick Synopsis:  A school appears to have been taken over by aliens, leaving only a few students to save the world from a more widespread takeover.

The Faculty is a great mix of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and any shitty high school drama you may have seen during your life.  I guess the best way to make those movies enjoyable would be to add a sci-fi killer race to take them out one by one.  After the initial horror-style beginning, the audience is given a solid introduction to the characters that all appear to fit the usual character tropes of a movie about high school students; better than most dramas and comedies that attempt to the same.  As the movie adds in the science fiction elements and added level of intrigue and mystery come along with it.  There are a lot of clever little elements that do not always appear in the horror genre. Along with the
mystery, there is also a respectable amount of suspense and humor built within the movie that adds even more entertainment.  There are some campy, sometimes corny (last scene), elements to the movie but I do not think that's a huge negative in a horror movie.  I think that it is important to give some kudos to whoever was behind the casting of the movie.  Although it may not have sprung the career of a Depp or an Aniston like other horror films, almost the entire cast has seen a lot more success than they had before The Faculty.  While I don't think it gets as much acknowledgement as other late 90s horror, The Faculty is one of the better awful horror movies.

Fun Fact: Salma Hayek was not going to be apart of the film at all, but she begged Robert Rodriguez to put her in.

Hidden Gem:  Josh Hartnett's character sells alleged full-frontal videos of Neve Campbell and Jennifer Love Hewitt to two students in a scene early in the film.  As most know, they were the stars of the two horror blockbusters from the previous two years, Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.
