Deliver Us from Evil (2014)

Starring: Eric Bana, Édgar Ramírez, and Joel McHale

Homicidal Maniac: Sean Harris as Santino (Possessed by Demon)

Run time: 1:58:00

Quick Synopsis: A New York City police officer teams up with a priest to help solve crimes that appear to be related to possessions.

There is nothing really new or special about Deliver Us From Evil, but that does not mean that it is entertaining.  Successfully making a exorcism/possession film using the correct techniques from past films is not always easy for filmmakers.  There are a lot of shitty films in this sub-genre and this is not one of them.  One element that does set the film
apart somewhat is the crime-thriller aspects of the film.  Even if you take out the supernatural elements of the film the audience would still have been entertained by the story.  The pacing is also pretty solid; the film is almost two hours long but it really doesn't feel like it.  Both Eric Bana and Édgar Ramírez are are impressive in their roles in the film.  There are scenes that will creep some people out, but I don't think anyone will be looking back at this film to find a scene that they have to see again.  That's something that set The Exorcist apart that sometimes may get overlook.  The suspense is there but it is not enough as you would want.  I really can remember a scene that I know will frighten a large portion of the audience.

While it may not be too original, Deliver Us From Evil is still an entertaining awful horror movie.

Fun Fact:
Although the film is supposed to be based on true events, the only truth is the name of cop Ralph Sarchie.  The cases were all completely made up for the movie.

Hidden Gem:
There are references to The Doors throughout the film.  Most are obvious, but one more subtle reference occurs when Sarchie and Mendoza are sitting waiting for Santinio.  During the scene the "January 4th" is written in the fog on the window.  January 4, 1967 was the date of The Doors first album.
