It (1990)

Director: Tommy Lee Wallace

Starring: Richard Thomas, Tim Reid, Annette O'Toole

Run time: 3:12

Rant: It tells the story of seven friends (The Losers Club) who come together to kill an almost immortal evil being.
Bill has a stutter and it's gotten worse since his brother was murdered.
Ben's father died in Korea and he has to live with his cousin who treats him like shit. He's also bullied because he's a fat fuck.
Beverly is physically abused by her father.
Mike is a black guy and is bullied because of it.
Stan is Jewish and is bullied because of it.
Eddie has an overprotective mother who tries to keep his friends away from him.
And Richie is a smart ass with giant glasses who (like all of them) is bullied by an asshole named Henry Bowers.

But children have been going missing and it isn't because of Henry Bowers. There's an ancient evil in the town of Derry, Maine. A self proclaimed "Eater of worlds and children." It's something that can take the shape of anything you're afraid of, but mostly takes the shape of a clown called Pennywise. The seven friends have to go into the sewer and kill it by this strange sort of psychic battle. If they believe silver can hurt It, it can hurt It. If they believe Eddie's asthma inhaler is filled with battery acid, they can use the inhaler to hurt It.

This is one of those rare occasions where I have actually read the source material. After watching the movie again I have to say this is an excellent adaption. Now, it isn't perfect and there are as we say "awful" parts but for a GIANT book intended to be a seven part mini-series they did a really good job of making a nice, tight 3 hour piece.

The best part of It (besides Tim Curry's excellent portrayal of the clown) is the performance of the young actors. These kids could have easily ruined the movie but all of them do a great job. This is why the first half of the movie is much better than the second. It's Stand by Me but with a monster. The second half is awful. Ultimately it's much more interesting to see children almost eaten by a clown, than grown adults fighting a giant spider.

Tim Curry is incredible. He looks at the children the way you or I look at a steak or a beer. Richard Thomas and John Ritter are fine. The rest of the adult actors are shit. Lana Lang sucks my balls. Fucking soap opera bullshit. Fuck you. These retards ruin the movie. All in all this is a fine awful horror movie held up by a classic interpretation of an extra-dimensional, world eating clown-spider. Fuck you.

Fun Fact: Richard Bellis won an Emmy for his score of this movie.

Hidden Gem: The school's principle, who is only shown in one scene, is played by William B. Davis, also known as the Cigarette Smoking Man from X-Files.
